T O D A Y I went live on Facebook talking sharing IGTV content ideas*.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ We - the one person watching live (shout out to Jeanie! 🙏🏼) - also chatted about the recent Instagram follower fluctuation. Was it intentional? was it a glitch? maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Whatever the reason for the mass unfollow-re-follow, there are a few key lessons to be learned from this incident:⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ 1. You’ve heard it before but there’s nothing like 2000 followers dropping away in an instant to remind you that you do not own Instagram and you have no control over what happens on our favourite platform (sorry Facebook 🤷🏻‍♀️). This is why it is vital that you focus on bringing followers off social media and onto your own website and on building a mailing list so, if the worst was to happen, you could easily contact your fans again.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ 2. A clean up is actually a good thing. There’s a reason why the whole world (myself included) is obsessed with Marie Kondo. Cleaning out the crap feels good 🙌🏼 Use this as a prompt to go through your follower list and ‘prune’ any undesirable accounts. There are 2 reasons you want to do this: ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ First, removing accounts that never engage with you boosts your overall engagement score which makes your account perform better 👊🏼 and ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Second, a high-quality follower list is going to come in handy next time you create a custom or lookalike audience for Facebook/Instagram ads. If your audience is based on crappy fake followers, guess what, you won’t get great conversion on your ads because fake followers don’t become real customers 🙅🏻‍♀️⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ 3. I might just be that special “someone” you’re looking for.⠀ ⠀ 👉🏻Tap the link in my bio for details of my coaching packages or shoot me a DM.⠀ ⠀ Working with me is much more palatable than my mother’s steaks, I assure you.⠀ ⠀ [image by @leahladsonphotography]⠀ ⠀ ⠀ D O we need to talk about IGTV? 💁🏻⠀ ⠀ It's not new, I know, but given that IGTV videos now appear in the main Insta feed, I suspect that this ugly duckling is about to go 'the full swan' so buckle up.⠀ ⠀ Another change that happened recently (aside from people losing 10 bazillion followers and then getting them back 😳) is that now when YOU create an IGTV video, a 1-min preview automatically appears on YOUR feed*⠀ ⠀ Aaaargh there is nothing like an ugly screen grab of your <hashtag>restingbitchface to mess up your picture-perfect feed 😭⠀ ⠀ * Note: You can manually override this when you load your video⠀ ⠀ If you do want to take advantage of IGTV and have a preview appear in your feed without causing aesthetic havoc, simply add a cover image to your IGTV clip and voila! all is right again in the world 🙌🏼⠀ ⠀ Create your cover image in Canva using the Instagram stories template and add to your IGTV video when you upload it. This will ensure that a beautifully created on-brand pic displays in your feed rather than your slack-jawed mug 🥴⠀ ⠀ Are you ready to give IGTV a try? Sorry if it turns out that I’ve been spreading fake news! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Click the link in my bio to read the latest. The benefits of getting rid of spammy followers, as listed below, still apply and, if nothing else, this post has sparked the joy of conversation 👯‍♀️ so we are still winning! >>⠀ ⠀ If you noticed a sudden drop in your follower number, rejoice! That means that IG have done the hard yards for you and you don’t have to manually block all those “💯 your feed is 🔥” accounts yourself.⠀ ⠀ Aside from saving you from a serious case of OOS hitting the ‘block’ button 200x, having fewer (real) followers is also good for a few other reasons:⠀ ⠀ 1. Real people are more likely to engage with your content ❤️⠀ 2. Real people are more likely to become paying customers in real life 📈⠀ 3. Your overall engagement % will increase as a result of having fewer followers = better performance for your account overall and a greater chance of your content being seen by ... you guessed it! ... more real people 👊🏻💃🏼⠀ ⠀ Cheers to that 🥂 Ding dong the bots are gone!⠀ ⠀ P.S.
